The mass distribution of over five million insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) by the Oyo State Government has commenced.
This is part of the State Government’s efforts at curbing the spread of malaria across the 33 local government areas of the state .
The official flag-off ceremony took place at Idi-ogungun Primary Health Care Centre, Agodi Gate, Ibadan North LGA.
At the event, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, said that the initiative reflects the government’s unwavering commitment to protecting vulnerable groups, especially pregnant women and children under five.
Dr. Ajetunmobi while cautioning residents against misuse of the mosquito nets for other purposes condemned those who use it as fishing nets, window covers, commercial displays among others.
She said new sets of nets are made with breathable materials that do not retain heat when used in ventilated rooms.
She also condemned the habit of hoarding ,saying whoever is caught in the act would face legal consequences.
Dr.Ajetunmobi encouraged mothers and expectant women to routinely tuck their children inside the nets every night in order to prevent illnesses and hospital visits.
According to the commissioner,the distribution is expected to run between 1st and 7th of August, 2025.
