The hope of the Super Eagles of Nigeria to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup got slimmer yesterday after playing a 1-1 draw with the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in their qualifying encounter.
Nigeria needed all three points to keep hope of playing at the World cup alive but suffered a setback in the 25th minute when captain William Troost-Ekong put the ball into his own net to give South Africa the lead.
Although, defender Calvin Bassey equalised late in the first half, the Super Eagles had to settle for a share of the spoil, failing to secure the much needed victory.
Nigeria now sits second in group c with 11 points behind South Africa, who are top of the table with 17 points.
Nigeria’s remaining two group games are against Benin Republic and Lesotho next month.
