The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Tuesday arraigned Salifu Olije Mustapha before Justice A.I. Akobi of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Kubwa, Abuja, over alleged impersonation and fraudulent activities linked to the commission.
Mustapha was brought before the court on a four-count charge bordering on impersonation, misrepresentation and alleged involvement in defrauding unsuspecting members of the public while posing as a law enforcement operative.
According to one of the charges, the defendant allegedly pretended to be an officer of the Nigerian Air Force in March 2026 and assisted two other suspects, identified as Abubakar, who is currently at large, and Haruna Mamuda, who is under investigation by another law enforcement agency.
The prosecution alleged that Mustapha conveyed the suspects, dressed in fake EFCC operational uniforms, in a Toyota Corolla with registration number KTU399GT to Sheriff Plaza in Wuse II, Abuja, where they allegedly targeted and defrauded members of the public.
Another count stated that the defendant falsely presented himself as a Nigerian Air Force officer and, in that assumed capacity, allegedly deceived and extorted unsuspecting individuals, an offence said to be contrary to provisions of the Penal Code Act.
When the charges were read before the court, Mustapha pleaded guilty to all four counts. Following his plea, prosecution counsel, R.U. Adaga, urged the court to convict and sentence the defendant accordingly.
Justice Akobi subsequently adjourned the matter until June 1, 2026 for sentencing. The EFCC disclosed that Mustapha was arrested after intelligence reports linked him to the impersonation of EFCC operatives.
Investigators reportedly caught him alongside two other suspects wearing fake EFCC uniforms while allegedly harassing motorists and extorting money from them.
