NUT Calls For Urgent Action To Rescue Kidnapped Teachers, Pupils In Oyo

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Oyo State wing has expressed renewed concern over the continued captivity of pupils and teachers abducted during an attack on schools in the Ahoro-Esinle and Yawota communities of Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Recall that the affected teachers pupils were on Friday 15th May 2026 abducted and whisked away to an unknown destination

In a statement issued on Saturday, the union said the situation had become more troubling following the emergence of another video allegedly released by the abductors.

The video reportedly showed some of the victims in distress while appealing for their freedom.

The NUT described the development as heartbreaking and unacceptable, noting that no child or teacher should be subjected to such traumatic experiences. The union said the prolonged captivity of the victims has continued to cause emotional and psychological pain to their families, colleagues, and the wider education community.

The teachers’ body called on the Federal and Oyo State governments, as well as security agencies, to intensify efforts aimed at securing the immediate and safe release of the abducted pupils and teachers.

According to the union, the situation requires urgent and coordinated action driven by intelligence gathering and effective security operations. It stressed that every moment spent in captivity increases concerns about the wellbeing and safety of the victims.

While acknowledging ongoing interventions by government authorities and security operatives, the NUT maintained that more decisive measures are needed to bring the ordeal to an end. The union urged security agencies to strengthen surveillance, improve community intelligence, and deploy all necessary resources to facilitate a successful rescue mission.

The union also appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents to support security agencies by providing useful information that could aid rescue efforts. It emphasized that protecting children and teachers should remain a collective responsibility.

Reaffirming its support for the families of the abductees, the NUT noted it would continue to call for safer learning environments across the country including Oyo State . The union further advocated for swift action and renewed commitment from all relevant authorities to ensure the safe return of the victims and prevent future attacks on schools.
