Just In: New Pope Emerges….. Makes First Speech

White smoke has billowed from the chimney atop the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel signalling that the 133 Cardinals inside have elected a new Pope.
They picked a successor to Pope Francis on the second day of voting.
He is Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, the 267th Pope, who took the name Pope Leo XIV.
The new Pope immediately addressed the square in confident Italian, switching to Spanish briefly at the end when thanking his former diocese in Peru.
“I would like this greeting of peace to reach all your hearts and families… and people around the world. May peace be with you,” Pope Leo XIV began as the square fell silent.
He also insisted on the need for unity, and at the end asked everyone to join together in prayer.
