Ogun State Keen At Probing Death Of A Secondary School Student

The Ogun State Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology, Professor Abayomi Arigbabu has warned teachers in public primary and secondary schools to desist from administering corporal punishment on learners under their care.
Professor Arigbabu stated this when he led a Delegation to the family of the late student, Monday Arijo, whose sudden death was linked to the effect of corporal punishment meted out to him by one of his teachers at Obada Grammar School, Idi -emi,Ogun State.
The Commissioner explained that a committee had been set up to look into the circumstances surrounding the incident and assured the people of the government’s commitment at ensuring the well-being of all students and promoting other ways to instil discipline in the learners.
Also, the Special Adviser on Education to Governor Dapo Abiodun, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, while speaking during the visit, promised that the state government would continue to support the family and put measures in place to prevent a recurrence of such unfortunate incident.
Responding on behalf of the family, Mr. Abdulateef Oduntan said the family was not interested in having a legal battle with the state government over the tragic incident, but expressed the need for the relevant authorities to do everything possible to avert a recurrence.
Meanwhile, the State government has announced that a post-mortem was being carried out by the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta to determine the cause of Monday Ariyo’ death.
