Students of one of Nigeria’s Prestigious University, University of Ibadan have kicked against the decision of the management to increase tuition fees.
The students, on Friday, staged a peaceful protest tagged #UI Fees Must Fall to demand a reversal to the old school fees
The students numbering about ten held placards with inscriptions such as “Education is not a commodity to be sold”; and “The funding of education should not be contracted”; as they chanted solidarity songs at the car park of the institution.
Speaking on behalf of the protesting students, Ayodele Aduwo, a 300 level Student of the premier university called on the governing board of the institution led by Chief Bisi Akande to prevail on UI management to rescind their decision to prevent cases of students drop out, prostitution and suicide as a result of inability to pay the fees.
The students also called for end to alleged intimidation of three of their colleagues invited by the disciplinary committee of the institution for staging protest in the school
Efforts to get reaction from the Directorate of Public communication of the school proved unsuccessful as the contact person, Mrs Jumoke Akinpelu declined comment on the protest.
Recall that the management had shutdown the institution for three weeks to avert the proposed protest by student union against increment in tuition fees .
