Nigeria Police Force ,Ondo State Command has issued a stern warning to residents regarding the spread of fake news ahead of the governorship election scheduled for November 16.
In a statement,Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, highlighted a troubling trend involving the circulation of old videos containing misleading information, allegedly aimed at inciting unrest within local communities.
The statement pointed to several recent viral videos, which have since been debunked, emphasising that such misinformation poses serious risks, particularly during election periods.
The statement read, “Recently, a video showing flooding in Ore from August 2013 was irresponsibly circulated by individuals whose motives remain unclear. Such actions are not only misleading but also pose significant risks, especially during this crucial electoral period. The spread of misinformation can undermine public trust, incite violence, jeopardise public safety, and threaten the integrity of our democracy—ultimately depriving the people of a fair opportunity to exercise their civic rights and responsibilities.
“In another instance, a story alleging that fingers were amputated from a corpse at a mortuary in Ajowa-Akoko was confirmed to be false by the Divisional Police Officer who visited the morgue.”
The command emphasised the necessity of verifying information before sharing or reposting, stating that constructive engagement is vital for fostering a peaceful atmosphere during this pivotal moment in the state’s history.
While assuring citizens of their commitment, in collaboration with sister security agencies, to ensure a free, fair, and safe election, the command stated it would not hesitate to take action against anyone caught engaging in activities that could disrupt the peace before, during, and after the election.
“The command will respond appropriately and within the law to any kinetic or non-kinetic threats to the peace of the elections,” the statement concluded.
