FG Launches Greenhouse Gas Emission Meters

The Federal Government has launched the Greenhouse Gas emission meters to monitor and quantify the volume of greenhouse gases released across the country.

The event was the Maiden Edition of the National Environment Health Excellence Award (NEHEA), and was organised by the Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON) on Tuesday in Abuja.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and improving public health in Nigeria.

“We shall continue to push the boundaries of what is possible to improve our environment and public health by championing policies prioritizing the people and the planet.”

President Bola Tinubu described the initiative as a testament to his administration’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

“This ceremony is not merely a recognition of individual excellence but a testament to our collective resolve to forge a Nigeria where clean air, safe water, and sustainable practices are the birthright of every citizen.”

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, President Tinubu urged Nigerians to embrace innovation, collaboration and investment as viable solutions to protect the environment and public health for future generations.

“The Government cannot act alone. From the farmer adopting climate-smart techniques to the corporation investing in green technology, every Nigerian has a role to play. Environmental stewardship is not a burden but an opportunity to redefine progress.”

Meanwhile, President Tinubu was honored with the Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management and Leadership, USA (Nigeria Chapter), as well as the title of Life Grand Patron of the Society for Environmental Public Health of Nigeria, SEPHON.

He also received the Legend of Environmental Health Sustainability Award, the highest recognition in the field.

“I am deeply honoured to accept the Environmental Health Leadership Excellence Award 2025. This accolade belongs not to me alone but to every stakeholder—government agencies, health professionals, civil society, and private sector partners—who have laboured tirelessly to embed sustainability into Nigeria’s development blueprint.”

“My appointment as Grand Patron of the National Environment and Public Health Association of Nigeria (NEPHAN) and the title of “Life Fellow” of the Society for Environmental and Public Health of Nigeria (SEPHON) are dual callings. They compel me to redouble my commitment to safeguarding our environment and championing policies prioritizing the people and the planet.”

He commended EHCON for its unwavering dedication to improving the nation’s environmental health standards and practices.

“Your unwavering dedication to improving our nation’s environmental health standards and practices is commendable.”

In addition, 82 individuals from the public and private sectors received different categories of Award for their contributions to environmental health services.

Among them were Dr. Muhammed Bulama the Director-General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), who bagged the Frontier of Healthy Environment Award.

Mallam Balarabe Abbas lawal,the Minister of Environment, commended the awardees for setting remarkable standards in waste management, pollution control, climate resilience, and community engagement.

Dr Yakubu Baba, EHCON Registrar, said the award recognises individuals and organisations, both in the public and private sectors who have distinguished themselves in the delivery and support of environmental health services and practices in Nigeria.

Dr. Baba, explained that the National Environmental Health Excellence Award was being held for the first time since the council’s inception

The event also featured the unveiling of the National Environmental Health Practice Regulations, 2025, and the inauguration of the Premises-Based National Greenhouse Gas Emissions Monitoring Programme.
