VIDEO: NAFDAC Destroys Medicines Worth Billions Of Naira

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has again destroyed dangerous medicines worth Billions of Naira as the agency continues efforts at safeguarding the health of Nigerians.

The exercise which took place at the Oyo State Government approved dumpsite in Akinyele Local Government Area of the State was witnessed by NAFDAC Director General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye.

Professor Adeyeye who was represented by the Director, Narcotics and Controlled Substances, Mrs Yeduni Adenuga said that the items destroyed including the expired, contraband, unregistered and counterfeit drugs, were seized from Idumota open Drug outlets during a three week exercise with the support of approved security personnel including military, police and DSS.

She reminded Nigerians that the initiative was essential to prevent the reintroduction of expired, fake, substandard and falsified drugs into circulation for human consumption.

Professor Adeyeye who listed the items set ablaze by the Agency, such as expired and controlled substances like Analgin, tramadol among other drugs affirmed that such drugs in circulation contributed to the issue of insecurity in the Country.

The NAFDAC Director General reiterated the Agency ‘s committed to ensuring that maternal and child care were upheld, citing example of recent operation as large amounts of poorly stored vaccines and products were evacuated.

Professor Adeyeye appealed to community, and religious leaders as well as media professionals to join in the fight against falsified, fake medicines by providing valuable information that would assist to eradicate the presence of unregistered and dangerous medicines and other violative products from the society.

The Director, Investigative Enforcement, NAFDAC, Mr Mohammed Shaba said the commencement of the destruction of product at Idumota, Lagos, Onisha, Ariaria, Ezeuku and other Open drug markets in the country would be a continuous process untill the products were finally seized and destroyed.

The event featured goodwill messages from the Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Nigeria Police, Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, PCN, among others.
