The Lagos State Government has disclosed that 91 lives and N19.52bn worth of property were lost to various fire incidents in 2024.
Speaking at the Lagos International Fire Safety Conference 2.0 held at the Balmoral Convention Centre, Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, the State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu highlighted the importance of collaboration and innovation in fire prevention.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to combating fire disasters through a strategic combination of modern technology and grassroots engagement.
“This conference has become a united front in our shared mission to protect lives, property, and the very heartbeat of the economy of our state from the devastating impact of fire,” the Governor said.
Governor Sanwo-Olu maintained that in 2023, the Lagos Fire and Rescue Service responded to over 2,500 distress calls.
“Each call was more than a statistic; they were lives interrupted, businesses disrupted, dreams endangered,” he said.
However, the Lagos State Governor pointed out that, following the inaugural Fire Safety Conference in June last year, the State recorded a significant decline in fire incidents, attributing this success to a collective approach that blends technology with community willpower.
