Ogun State House of Assembly has taken step to seek the immediate intervention of the State Government and the management of Nigeria Immigration Service on the alleged maltreatment of some residents of border communities, especially of Egun descent, who are indigenes of the State by Immigration officials.
The Speaker of the House, Mr Oludaisi Elemide made this known shortly after a member representing Ipokia/ Idiroko State Constituency, Mr Adebisi Oyedele, raised the matter during a plenary at the assembly complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
Corroborating the allegation by his counterparts representing Ado-Odo/ Ota 2 State Constituency, Mr Musefiu Lamidi and Yewa North 1 State Constituency, Mr Adegoke Adeyanju, reported the challenges being faced by some of the residents of border communities in their various constituencies in Ogun West Senatorial District in the hands of the Federal officials including difficulty in recognising the Egun people as Nigerians, and the issue of sales of fuel 20 kilometers from the land borders.
According to them, the residents who are of Egun descent, were being denied Nigerian passports despite meeting all application requirements.
The Speaker, Mr Oludaisi Elemide, directed that there was need to look into the allegations of the maltreatment of the minority group in the State.
He therefore requested an official engagement with the State Controller of Immigration and the State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to investigate the complaints and demand the State Government intervention to prevent further marginalization.
Meanwhile, a member representing Ijebu-East State Constituency, Mr Waliu Owode drew the attention of the Assembly and the Executive to an incident in Imobi town; where an Elephant from Omo Forest Reserve at Area J4 reportedly killed a farmer, Yaya Musa- Kalamu.
Responding, the Speaker assured that an on-the-spot assessment visit would be done to the site of the incident at a later date, while commiserating with the family of the victim and the residents of the area.
