President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians to draw strength from the nation’s history and recommit to unity as the country marks its 65th Independence anniversary.
In a national broadcast on Wednesday to mark Nigeria’s 65th independence anniversary, President Tinubu recalled the sacrifices of Nigeria’s founding fathers and mothers, who envisioned a strong, prosperous, and united country.
He acknowledged that the journey since 1960 has been marked by challenges, including civil war, military rule, and political crises. However, he stressed that despite these setbacks, Nigeria has shown resilience and courage to remain together as one nation.
Highlighting national progress, the president pointed to the expansion of education, healthcare, infrastructure, and technology compared to the early years of independence. He noted that Nigeria now boasts hundreds of universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education, alongside vast improvements in telecommunications and industry.
According to him, while the country is not yet where its founders dreamt it would be, significant strides have been made in social and economic development. He urged citizens to celebrate these achievements rather than dwell only on shortcomings. President Tinubu concluded by reaffirming his government’s commitment to building a more perfect union where every Nigerian can find opportunity, fulfilment, and a sense of belonging.
He assured Nigerians that his administration remains committed to youth empowerment and national security as the country marks its 65th anniversary.
President Tinubu described young people as the country’s greatest asset and future leaders.
He announced that more than 510,000 students have benefited from the government’s education loan scheme, with over 99 billion Naira already disbursed.
According to the President, other initiatives, including Credicorp, YouthCred, and the iDICE programme, are providing affordable loans, digital tools, and creative opportunities for young Nigerians.
On security, the president praised the armed forces for their sacrifices in restoring peace in previously troubled areas of the North-East and North-West. Noting that victories against terrorism, banditry, and separatist violence are allowing displaced Nigerians to safely return to their communities.
He acknowledged that economic reforms have brought hardship but insisted that the temporary pain is yielding long-term benefits.
The President stressed that the true measure of progress would be seen in food security, education, electricity supply, and safer communities.
President Tinubu ended with a message of hope, urging Nigerians to embrace productivity, innovation, and patriotism, calling on citizens to put Nigeria first and reaffirming his belief that a new era of prosperity and self-reliance is within reach.
