Oyo NUJ Facilitates Google Training For Over 100 Journalists

Commissioner for Information in Oyo State, Prince Dotun Oyelade has commended the current leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Oyo State Council, for prioritising training and retraining of members on emerging technology trends in the world.

In less than 3 months in office, the leadership of the NUJ in the state had already facilitated two trainings on Artificial intelligence, AI for over 200 journalists in the state, a feat that has been described as unprecedented.

In his remarks at the AI Growth Lab training by Google in partnership with Oyo NUJ, held at the Amphitheater hall, Dominion Broadcast House, 13 Palm Groove, Iyaganku, Ibadan, Prince Oyelade lauded efforts of the organizers of the training, describing it as timely in view of the emerging impact of modern technology

He appealed to media professionals to make good use of the training to remain above board the profession.

The information commissioner said any journalist in Oyo State, who is keen on developing him or herself and being in tune with evolving technologies, must identify with the current leadership of the NUJ in Oyo State.

Similarly, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde , Dr Sulaimon Olanrewaju said failure of NUJ members to utilize the training may render beneficiaries redundant in the field of journalism.

In an interview, the chairman, NUJ, Oyo state council, Mr Akeem Abas noted that the training was part of the fulfilment of the mandate of the union.

He said that the current era of journalism practice in the country had been eroded by misinformation adding that the training would enable media professionals to fact check information.

The AI team lead, who is also communication and public relations manager of Google for West Africa, Mr Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade said AI is the most transformative instrument that is currently impacting various field in world.

Mr Kola- Ogunlade enjoined the NUJ members to make responsible use of AI in their career and life endeavours.

One hundred and ten members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Oyo state council benefited from the one day training on the application of Artificial intelligence to boost their performance and capacity in journalism in the state.

They were exposed to various AI tools that would assist them in the journalism profession.
