Cardiologist Suggests Innovative Way Of Protecting The Heart

Nigerians have been charged to always walk around while making phone calls as an innovative way to increase their physical fitness.
A Consultant Cardiologist at Lagos State Teaching Hospital, Dr.Olusegun Akinsanya made the call while speaking on the topic “Heart Health and Body Fitness: Why It Matters”, via a webinar.
Dr.Akinsanya, who explained that the heart is a pivotal organ in the body, maintained that it required adequate attention to ensure longevity of life.
The cardiologist explained that cardiovascular disease, CAD, was the leading cause of death in the country highlighting some of the risk factors to include; family history, high salt diet, aging, diabetes and hypertension.
He underscored the importance of physical activities,with special emphasis on exercise.
‘’Risk factors are obesity,abdominal obesity,physical inactivity,alcohol consumption,low Potassium diet,Insulin resistance,environmental and air pollution‘’He said.
The Cardiologist while discussing ways to prevent CAD noted that regular exercise, regular medical checks and healthy diet and lifestyle were needed to protect the heart.
‘’People make mistakes,saying why should I exercise , I am not fat,exercise is only for obese people.However,there is no part of your body that exercise can not positively impact. It even improves your memory.World Health Organisation recommends ten thousand steps a day to improve health, some other researchers have prescribed eight thousand steps. Reduce consumption of red meat , processed foods and increase consumption of fruits,vegetables and whole grains.On your weight, ensure that your BMI is not more than 24.9.” He noted.
Dr.Akinsanya implored the public to look out for warning signs of heart problems ,urging them to seek medical help when necessary.
“When you experience palpitations, aware of your heart beats,chest pain,progressively worsening breathlessness,leg swelling, fainting attacks and you’re easily fatigued,you may have to immediately seek medical help.” The Cardiologist said.
He also implored the people to monitor their blood pressure regularly and always create time to rest.
