The Vice Chairman of Ilejemeje Local Government Area in Ekiti State, Grace Ogunleye, has been remanded in custody following allegations that she masterminded her own abduction.
An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court presided over by Abayomi Adeosun ordered her remand at the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre after she was arraigned on charges connected to the alleged kidnapping hoax.
The court ordered that the case file be duplicated and forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice before further proceedings.
Grace Ogunleye was declared missing on May 20, 2026, after her vehicle was found abandoned along the Ipere–Iludun Ekiti Road, sparking concerns over her safety and prompting a coordinated search by security agencies, including the police, military and local vigilantes.
She was eventually picked up and rescued the following day, bringing relief to residents and government officials who had feared she had fallen victim to kidnappers.
However, police investigations later allegedly revealed that the reported abduction was staged. Investigators claimed the arrangement was aimed at generating money to settle personal financial obligations and meet certain political commitments.
Commenting on the development, the Chairman of Ilejemeje Local Government Area, Pius Dada, described the incident as regrettable, warning that false kidnapping claims could erode public confidence in security agencies and government institutions. He maintained that no public official is above the law and that anyone found culpable must be held accountable.
