The Nigerian Bar Association NBA, Ibadan Branch has frowned at and strongly condemned the alleged physical assault and unlawful detention of of its member, Oluwatope Olaniyan, by police officers attached to Olohunda Aba Division in Ibadan, Oyo State.
This is contained in a statement issued to newsmen by the Chairman of the branch, Mr Ibrahim Lawal.
In the statement, Mr Lawal demanded immediate and thorough investigation into the incident describing it as an abuse of office and human rights.
According to the account of the incident , the victim , Mr Olaniyan—a legal practitioner with 14 years post-call experience—was brutally assaulted, stripped naked, and unlawfully detained by armed police officers led by one Inspector Benjamin Alolo during a raid of his community at Lakuru, Idiape/Olounda, around 2am on the night of 6th of July 2025.
The Inspector and his men in gestapo-style operation reportedly invaded the community with sporadic gunfire that threw residents into panic.
An attempt by Mr. Olaniyan in his capacity as a legal practitioner to clarify the legality of the arrests and searches was rebuffed as he was allegedly assaulted on the spot.
The statement reveals that all entreaties to calm the officers down fell on deaf ears with the officers making derogatory remarks generally about lawyers which subsequently triggered a crisis resulting in a life-threatening medical condition for Mr Olaniyan now requiring urgent treatment.
The NBA has then called on Oyo state Commissioner of Police to open a formal investigation into the case and ensure that perpetrators of the dastardly act were brought to justice.
