A total of 931 candidates from the South-West region have been screened for the Petroleum Technology Development Fund , PTDF, overseas scholarship scheme in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
On the occasion, which took place at the University of Ibadan, UI, the PTDF Zonal Team Leader, Mr. Masud Mohamed, disclosed that 749 candidates were screened last week for the Master’s category through morning and afternoon sessions held over five days, adding that additional 182 candidates are currently undergoing screening for PhD programmes in oil and gas-related disciplines.
Mr. Mohamed, who is also a Manager at the College of Petroleum Studies, Kaduna, explained that the PTDF scholarship is a strategic intervention to build indigenous capacity and bridge the expertise gap in Nigeria’s petroleum industry.
He noted that the screening is strictly for courses related to oil and gas and has consistently produced scholars making meaningful societal contributions.
The PTDF ZONAL Head further revealed that six centres have been established across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones for the decentralised exercise, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda on human capacity development.
Some applicants, including Funke Olaonipekun and Uchechukwu Ginika, praised the process for its fairness and transparency. Ginika, a PhD applicant to the University of Strasbourg, France, commended PTDF for its continued investment in educational advancement.
The PTDF scheme has been running for several years, supporting postgraduate studies in critical oil and gas fields abroad.
