Oyo Govt To Establish Electricity Market, Targets 100% Power Supply

In a bid to revitalise energy independence and economic growth, the Oyo state government under the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde has kicked off the process of establishing its own electricity market, aimed at achieving hundred percent power supply across the state before 2035.
The State Commissioner for Energy, Professor Daud Sangodoyin dropped the hint during a stakeholders’ meeting on the draft of Oyo state Electricity policy and Electricity bill held in Ibadan.
Professor Sangodoyin disclosed that the review of the draft bill and policy was an important step towards establishing a legal and regulatory framework that will empower Oyo state to issue licences to transmission and distribution companies in the State.
The Commissioner while reeling out the strategic roadmap, said that it includes short- term mid- term and long term goals that will enhance the plans of the state for private sector participation once the laws backing it up are enacted.
Professor Sangodoyin stressed that Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration is committed to leveraging electricity access to improve the standard of living and economic growth of Oyo state residents.
Earlier in his remarks, the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Mr. Abiodun Aikomo reiterated the urgent need for a modern legal framework that would allign with current electricity realities in the power sector.
He said this would further enhance easy generation and distribution of power effectively.
The key objectives of Oyo state Electricity bill are to; strengthen the state electricity regulatory commission, encouraging clean and clear renewable energy development, providing legal backing for electricity related offences and enforcement among others in the State.
