Oyo State Government has joined few other State Governments in Nigeria that have officially banned signing out celebrations by final-year students in private and public Schools.
The directive by the Oyo State Government is contained in a Statement by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade after its announcement by the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr Olusegun Olayiwola during the 2025 /2026 pre-resumption meeting with all the Principals of Public Secondary Schools, held at Lagelu Grammar School, Ibadan.
According to the statement, the step is a response to increasing reports of misconducts, violence, and public disturbances associated with such events across the State.
Mr Olayiwola also reaffirmed the enforcement of the existing ban on mobile phone usage by students in schools, stressing that such devices pose significant distractions, facilitate access to non-educational content, and can contribute to cyberbullying and misconduct.
He commended the Principals for their dedication to molding young minds and sustaining educational standards in the State, adding that no student should face financial barriers in pursuit of education, with a warning to the Principals to avoid collection of unauthorized levies or illegal fees from students or parents.
He directed the principald to recommend only government-approved textbooks, selected for their quality, reusability, and alignment with the curriculum, stressing that compliance with the directives will be closely monitored by the Ministry.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Teaching Service Commission, TESCOM, Mrs. Olubukola Oladipupo, urged Principals and Teachers to seek clarification before writing petitions and emphasized her openness to constructive dialogue for the improvement of education in the State.
Representatives of key education bodies, including the Oyo State President of All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools, ANCOPSS, Mr Christopher, Akinloye, and the Chairman, Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT, Mr Oladimeji lauded Governor Seyi Makinde for prioritizing the welfare of workers, particularly teachers, and pledged their support to make the academic year successful and impactful for students.
