The Federal Government has said it is unveiling a new initiative that will allow journalists and selected media practitioners and organisations to accompany military personnel during operations in conflict zones, a move targeted at enhancing transparency in the country’s security efforts in combating banditry and other criminal activities.
Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, announced the plan on Thursday in Abuja, saying it would offer media professionals firsthand insight into military activities and the conditions under which troops operate across various theatres of conflict.
The minister noted that direct exposure to security operations would enable journalists to report more accurately on the challenges, risks and sacrifices encountered by members of the armed forces in the line of duty.
The minister emphasized that addressing contemporary security threats requires collaboration among government agencies, the media, the private sector and the general public. He added that access to credible information remains vital in fostering public support for security initiatives.
The proposed arrangement reflects ongoing discussions on embedding journalists with military formations and operations, a practice meant to strengthen military -journalist operations
Observers believe such engagement could also help counter misinformation and provide greater context to security developments.
The initiative forms part of broader government efforts to further improve communication on the fight against insecurity and promote public confidence and enlightenment in the armed forces by offering greater visibility into military operations and achievements.
