Flesh-Eating Disease Surfaces In Adamawa

Unusual and serious disease reportedly destroying human flesh and bones has surfaced in Adamawa State, with 28 cases recorded in the State.
Chairman, State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, SPHDA, Dr. Suleiman Bashir confirmed the outbreak while addressing Journalists at a News Briefing on Saturday.
Dr Bashir said some of the affected residents are currently receiving treatment at Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, MAUTH, Yola,Adamawa State capital, while tissue samples have been sent to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, Abuja for detailed analysis.
According to him, Laboratory results are expected within 10 days, and urged patients to seek professional medical care rather than rely on traditional remedies.
“Despite the government’s efforts, only eight of the identified victims have agreed to undergo hospital treatment. The rest remain at local health centres or are managing the illness at home” Dr Bashir said.
The Chairman of the Agency noted that thr outbreak was most concentrated in Malabu, a community in Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa.
Narrating the symptoms, some of the affected patients said, the disease it would begin with a painful boil that eventually ruptures and erodes the surrounding flesh, sometimes reaching the bones.
One of the patients, Mrs. Phibi Sabo, shared her experience, “It started as a small boil, but it swelled, burst, and began to eat the flesh on my leg. The pain is intense, and the wound remains open, despite hospital visits”.
Another victim, Junaidu Adamu, revealed he had spent over ₦200,000 on treatment in the past two months without seeing any improvement.
Meanwhile, the District Head of Malabu, Alhaji Aliyu Hammawa confirmed that, almost 30 people have been affected so far.
He said, while some patients are under hospital care, the majority continued to struggle with the disease in their homes or local clinics.
Authorities are urging residents to report unusual symptoms immediately to curb the spread of the deadly disease, as Health Professionals in the State are grappling with it.
