Written by on October 5, 2025

The Nigerian Armed Forces has arrested 16 officers due to alleged acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations.

In a statement, Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, said the actions of the officers in question did not meet military standards.

Brigadier General Gusau said preliminary investigations showed that the officers’ actions were linked to frustrations arising from repeated failures in promotion exams and worries about halted career advancement.

He also mentioned that some of the officers were already being investigated for various offenses and were either on trial or awaiting court proceedings.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria announces that a routine military exercise has led to the arrest of sixteen officers due to indiscipline and violations of service regulations. Investigations indicate that their dissatisfaction largely arose from perceived career stagnation, primarily caused by repeated failures in promotion examinations, among other factors.”

“Several of the apprehended officers were already facing legal proceedings for various offenses, either awaiting or undergoing trial. Their behavior was considered inconsistent with the standards expected in military service.”

“Once the investigation is completed, the indicted officers will undergo the full military disciplinary process in line with established procedures. This ensures accountability and upholds professionalism within the Armed Forces.”

“The Armed Forces wants to assure the public that these measures are purely disciplinary and part of regular efforts to uphold order, discipline, and loyalty within its ranks.”

“The Armed Forces will not accept any behavior that compromises the institution’s integrity or jeopardizes its constitutional role under democratic authority. The Nigerian Armed Forces are dedicated to fulfilling their constitutional duties and maintaining professionalism at all times.”
