Just In: Power Minister, Adelabu Finally Resigns

In a bid to further pursue his political ambition to contest for governorship position in 2027 election in Oyo state,the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has officially resigned his position.
The minister in his resignation letter addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday also proposed the establishment of a Coordinating Minister to strengthen energy sector in the country
Special Adviser to the Minister on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Bolaji Tunji who said Chief Adelabu’s resignation takes effect from the 30th of April, 2026, said Adelabu expressed deep appreciation to the President for the opportunity to serve, describing his tenure as a privilege to contribute to national development especially the power sector
Adelabu explained that his decision was in consonance with the provisions of the Amended Electoral Act 2026, which excludes serving political office holders from contesting elections.
In his three page resignation letter, chief Adebayo disclosed that his gubernatorial aspiration dated back to 2016 during his tenure as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Reeling out his achievements in the power sector, Adelabu cited notable improvements in the distribution segment, including enhanced regulatory oversight, improved revenue collection, and progress in reducing Aggregate Technical, Commercial and Collection (ATC&C) losses.
Efforts to close the metering gap, he added, gained momentum through the Presidential Metering Initiative and the World Bank-supported Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP).
Chief Bayo Adelabu who observed that there are still other challenges in the sector, called on all stakeholders in the power sector to support government under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to bring positive improvement meant to better all Nigerians.
