The electoral umpire in the country has been directed by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja to begin the process of deregistering five political parties following a ruling that found them culpable violating constitutional provisions guiding their continued existence.
Delivering judgment on Monday, Justice Peter Lifu ruled in favour of the National Forum of Former Legislators, which had approached the court seeking an order compelling INEC to strike the affected parties off its register.
Among the parties affected by the decision are the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Action Alliance, Action Peoples Party, Accord Party and Zenith Labour Party.
The court held that the parties failed to comply with requirements stipulated under Section 225 of the 1999 Constitution.
The judgment places a fresh responsibility on INEC to initiate the deregistration process, a move that could alter the country’s political landscape ahead of future elections if eventually implemented.
While the directive lasts , reactions from the affected political parties and the electoral commission are still being held
