Stanley Nwabali was the hero as the Super Eagles of Nigeria defeated the Pharaohs of Egypt 4-2 on penalties to clinch the 3rd place spot in the 2025 African Cup of Nations, AFCON, in Morocco.
The game had ended goalless in regulation time after VAR overturned Akor Adams goal in the first half.
Midfielder Dele Bashiru missed the first spot kick for Nigeria, but Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali stayed composed to save the first two penalties by the Egyptians duo of Mohammed Salah and Omar Marmoush to give Nigeria the advantage.
Akor Adams, Moses Simon, Alex Iwobi and Ademola Lookman all converted their spot kicks to see off Egypt and finish third in the tournament.
The final will be decided on Sunday night at eight o’clock as Host Nation Atlas Lions of Morocco looks to end their 50-year wait for the AFCON trophy when they take on 2021 champions Terenga Lions of Senegal.
