Police Seek Synergy With Journalists To Tackle Insecurity

The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Ayodeji Abimbola, has appealed to journalists to continue to support the police through accurate and professional reportage
CP Abimbola made the appeal while receiving executives of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Oyo State Council, during a courtesy visit to the command headquarters at Eleyele, Ibadan.
CP Abimbola noted that the partnership between the police and the media had remained valuable over the years, especially in tackling security challenges and informing members of the public.
According to him, the police depend greatly on credible information from journalists and residents to carry out effective operations across the state.
The Police Commissioner, who recalled his early experience as a cub reporter with Radio Kwara, said misinformation had become common in society and urged media practitioners to uphold professionalism at all times.
He also assured journalists that the command was committed to maintaining discipline among officers, encouraging the public to report misconduct when necessary.
Abimbola further revealed that the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, had created a new police unit aimed at strengthening security operations nationwide.
He explained that officers selected for the unit had already undergone training and that the unit would be inaugurated at the Oyo State Command on May 16.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Oyo NUJ Council, Akeem Abas, praised the police commissioner for his efforts in maintaining peace and combating crime in the state.
He stressed the importance of cooperation among journalists, security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission ahead of the next general election, adding that the union was already planning a summit to support peaceful polls.
