Residents of Ogijo in Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State have been thrown into shock following the arrest of a teacher and choir master, Nathaniel Baiyegun, over the alleged abduction and killing of a 16-year-old secondary school student preparing for her WAEC examinations.

The State Police Command explained that the 30-year-old suspect purportedly deceived the teenager into following him under the pretense of attending a lesson.

The Police said investigation revealed that the victim was later taken to an uncompleted building where she was allegedly held captive while ransom discussions were ongoing with her family.

Police authorities explained that the suspect allegedly gave the teenager sleeping tablets, which reportedly caused her death. After discovering that the victim had died, he allegedly disposed of her body in a river around the MTN area in Ogijo.

According to the police, the suspect allegedly used the deceased girl’s phone to contact her father and demand a ransom of three million naira. The family was said to have later paid five hundred thousand naira in an effort to secure her release, not knowing she had already been killed.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun State, Mr Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed in a statement that investigations also uncovered the suspect’s alleged involvement in internet fraud and other criminal activities. He added that much of the ransom money was reportedly lost to online sports betting.

While speaking with journalists after his arrest, the suspect admitted that he worked as a teacher and also served as a choir master in the community. He reportedly confessed that the kidnapping was planned as a means of extorting money from the victim’s family before events allegedly spiraled out of control.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Mr Bode Ojajuni, praised officers of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit for successfully tracking down and arresting the suspect. He reassured residents that the command remains committed to tackling kidnapping and other crimes threatening public safety in the state.
