As Ekiti State government intensifies efforts to maintain healthy and clean environment, traders and shop owners operating beneath the newly constructed Overhead Bridge in Ado-Ekiti have been directed to immediately remove their goods.
The directive was issued by the Ekiti State government through the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources during a decongestion exercise carried out by officials of the Environmental Health and Sanitation Department in the state capital on Thursday.
Commissioner for Environment, Tosin Aluko-Ajisafe, who monitored the exercise, expressed displeasure over the growing display of goods and trading activities beneath the flyover, describing the development as a threat to public safety and free movement of vehicles and pedestrians.
She explained that the area around the overhead bridge was not approved for commercial activities, warning that indiscriminate occupation of public spaces could create environmental hazards and traffic obstruction if left unchecked.
The Commissioner urged traders affected by the enforcement exercise to relocate their businesses to approved market locations across the city, stressing that the government would continue to enforce environmental laws to preserve orderliness in the state.
She also appealed to residents to support the government’s sanitation and urban management efforts, adding that routine monitoring operations would continue in different parts of Ekiti to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
