WAFCON 2026: NFF Apologises For Super Falcon’s Poor Outing

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has apologised to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigerians following the Super Falcons’ failure to secure an automatic qualification ticket for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup at the ongoing 14th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
NFF in a statement signed on behalf of its Executive Committee on Tuesday said Super Falcons and the wider Nigerian football family, NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau acknowledged the disappointment caused by the setback.
It said the team entered the tournament with the hopes of millions of Nigerians and the strong backing of the Federal Government, making the outcome particularly painful.
The Football Federation while also expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for his continued support for Nigerian sports, particularly women’s football explained that NFF recalled the President’s unprecedented recognition of the Super Falcons after their previous WAFCON triumph, including financial rewards, national honours, houses and a grand reception for the players.
According to the federation, those gestures represented more than material benefits, as they demonstrated the President’s belief in Nigerian athletes and the ability of sports to unite the country.
The NFF maintained it was deeply regrettable that the Super Falcons could not immediately repay the confidence placed in them with the expected result.
The federation also extended its apology to the National Assembly, National Sports Commission, sponsors, stakeholders and millions of Super Falcons supporters across Nigeria and abroad stressing that the NFF and Nigeria’s World Cup dream is still alive, with the team having another opportunity through the CAF play-off route before the FIFA play-off tournament.
