VGN Foils Kidnap Attempt In Oyo State

Attempts by three suspected kidnappers to abduct a prominent figure in Itesiwaju Local Government Area of Oyo State have been foiled following the arrest of two of the suspects in Otu, the Local Government headquarters.
The suspects were reportedly arrested by members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, VGN, Oyo State Command, after weeks of intelligence gathering, tracking and surveillance.
According to the Operations Officer of the VGN in the State, Mr. Kola Olaoye, the suspects were allegedly contacted by an individual based in Kebbi State, who is said to be actively involved in kidnapping activities, to coordinate the planned abduction of a popular figure in Itesiwaju Local Government Area.
Mr. Olaoye explained that the suspects were unaware that their movements and activities were being monitored by local vigilantes, with logistical support from the Department of State Services, DSS.
He said the suspects were eventually arrested at their hotel hideout in Otu before they could execute the planned operation.
Items reportedly recovered from the suspects included mobile phones, which, according to the VGN, contained conversations detailing stages of the alleged kidnap plan, including requests for additional firearms and ammunition to carry out the operation.
The VGN said one other suspect linked to the alleged plot remains at large, while the two arrested suspects have been handed over to the DSS in Itesiwaju Local Government Area for further investigation.
Confirming the arrests, the Commander of the VGN, Oyo State Command, Comrade Sunday Olajide, commended the growing collaboration between the vigilante group and the DSS.
Comrade Olajide said the improved synergy and intelligence-sharing between both organisations played a significant role in the successful operation and prevention of the planned abduction.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the VGN to working with relevant security agencies to strengthen community security and prevent criminal activities across Oyo State.
