President Bola Tinubu has directed the Rivers State Governor, Mr Siminalayi Fubara, the Deputy Governor, Mrs Ngozi Odu and members of the State House of Assembly to resume to their offices on Thursday, September 18, 2025.
This followed the lifting on the 6 Months State of Emergency made by the President on March 18, this year.
In a statement, President Tinubu said his decision to lift the state of emergency was predicated on the fact that peace had returned to the State.
He noted that as of March 18, when he declared the state of emergency in the Rivers State, there was a total collapse of governance and the fragmentation of the legislative arm of government.
The President maintained that his intervention, along with other well-meaning Nigerians and Stakeholders, to resolve the conflict was unsuccessful, as both parties remained rigidly entrenched in their positions, to the detriment of peace and the development of the State.
President Tinubu, emphasised that based on the intelligence available to him, there is an indication that there is spirit of understanding, a robust readiness, and potent enthusiasm among all stakeholders in Rivers State for an immediate return to democratic governance, after the expiration of the Six months Emergency rule.
“It therefore gives me great pleasure to declare that the emergency in Rivers State of Nigeria shall end with effect from midnight today. The Governor, His Excellency Siminalayi Fubara, the deputy governor, Her Excellency Ngozi Nma Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and the speaker, Martins Amaewhule, will resume work in their offices from 18 September, 2025″ the President said.
President Tinubu, however, use the opportunity to remind the Governors and the State Houses of Assembly to continue to embrace peace, order, and good government, stressing that dividends of democracy could only be delivered to the people in an atmosphere of peace.
