INEC To National Assembly: Act Fast On Proposed Electoral Reforms

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has called on the National Assembly to treat the proposed amendments to the country’s electoral legal framework as very urgent and quickly pass it.

Professor Mahmood made the appeal on Thursday in Abuja while holding a meeting with the European Union (EU) Election Observation follow up Mission to Nigeria which was led by Barry Andrews

The INEC chairman while stressing the imperativeness of passing the amended electoral law urgently, noted that it will enhance the effective performance and discharge of duties of the electoral umpire. He opined that this will remove doubts and ambiguity capable of disrupting the commission activities.and work.

He said EU EOM 2023 reports captured 23 recommendations with (34.8) requiring action by INEC. Out of the recommendations, one was taken as priority by the commission. ” The commission has carefully evaluated all eight recommendations which are specifically targeted at INEC.” He stated

Professor Yakubu maintained that steps are being taken to give all the recommendations necessary attention and measures they deserve for their implementation.

He assured the EU EOM that the commission would maintain its engagement with both their mission and other observer groups. He noted further that the recommendations made had played a vital role in enhancing the quality of Nigeria electoral procedure.

Earlier in his comments, Barry Andrews emphasised that the mission visit to INEC was to evaluate the progress achieved in implementing the recommendations made from EO EOM report on the 2023 general election.

He stated that the mission was after overseeing that the recommendations made are properly implemented for effective performance of the body in Nigeria. Andrews expressed delight that INEC is implementing the recommendations for better improvements.
