Oriire Abduction: Oyo NUT Begins Indefinite Strike

Public primary and secondary schools across Oyo State are set to shut down from Monday, June 1, 2026, following a directive by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) ordering its members to embark on an indefinite strike over the continued captivity of abducted teachers and pupils in the state.

The union said the decision was necessary in response to the uncertainty surrounding the rescue and safe return of the victims, whose prolonged captivity has continued to generate concern among education stakeholders and residents of the state.

NUT noted that the security situation has created widespread fear among teachers, many of whom now feel unsafe carrying out their duties in schools. It explained that the development has also raised anxiety among parents and guardians not only in the affected areas but all schools in Oyo State.

The strike is expected to disrupt academic activities in public schools across the state, with thousands of pupils and students likely to be affected as teachers withdraw their services pending further directives.

In a statement announcing the action, the union said the industrial protest is intended to compel relevant authorities to intensify efforts aimed at securing the immediate release of the abducted teachers and pupils.

The NUT directed all affected teachers to comply fully with the strike order, remain peaceful, and stay at home while the union continues engagements with government agencies and other stakeholders on the matter.

The union reiterated its support for the abducted victims and their families, maintaining that the safety and welfare of teachers and learners remain paramount. It pledged to sustain lawful advocacy and consultations until those in captivity regain their freedom and confidence is restored in the state’s education system.
