There was excitement and loud cheers at the historic Mapo Hall in Ibadan as supporters gathered to witness a major political moment in Oyo State.
Governor Seyi Makinde officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election under the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement.
The declaration came during a rally attended by party loyalists, political associates and supporters from different parts of the state. The atmosphere at the venue was lively as music, chants and banners filled the ancient city centre, signalling the beginning of what many described as a new political chapter.
Addressing the crowd, Makinde confidently announced his ambition to lead the country, saying he was ready to contest for the office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2027. His statement drew applause from supporters who waved party flags and expressed optimism about the future.
The Governor’s announcement also comes amid ongoing political realignments in Oyo State, especially within factions of the Peoples Democratic Party ahead of the next general elections.
Political observers say the development may reshape alliances in the state and beyond.
Earlier before the declaration, Makinde reportedly led the Taminu Turaki faction of the PDP in signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the APM. The agreement is expected to strengthen cooperation between both groups as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 polls.
As part of the alliance, candidates loyal to the PDP faction contesting governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly seats are expected to run on the APM platform during the elections.
The move has already sparked conversations across the political landscape in Oyo State and among supporters nationwide.
