Oba Ladoja: One Year Coronation Anniversary On The Throne As Olubadan, A Reign Of Development, Community Renewal And Reform

When Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja ascended the revered throne of the Olubadan of Ibadanland as the 44th Olubadan on September 26, 2025, he inherited not merely a traditional institution but a historic responsibility to provide moral leadership, promote unity and contribute to the social and economic advancement of one of Nigeria’s most important urban centres.

Oba Ladoja’s emergence marked a significant moment in the history of Ibadan. His journey through the traditional hierarchy, spanning decades, culminated in his coronation at the historic Mapo Hall after his predecessor, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin joined his ancestors.

Exactly a year on the throne, the former Oyo State Governor, a one time Senator and Elder Statesman has increasingly demonstrated that his conception of traditional leadership goes beyond ceremonies, titles and preservation of customs.

His approach has been characterised by community security, economic revitalisation, responsible traditional administration, youth development, engagement with government and advocacy for the collective interests of Ibadanland.

From the outset, the monarch made his priorities clear. He pledged to use the Olubadan stool to promote economic revitalisation, youth empowerment, peaceful coexistence and an environment capable of attracting investments. He also assured investors that Ibadan remained fertile ground for business and economic growth.

SECURITY AS A COMMUNITY RESPONSIBILITY

One of the most significant initiatives associated with the first year of his reign has been the renewed emphasis on grassroots security.

In April 2026, Oba Ladoja inaugurated the Ibadan Community Guards, an initiative designed to complement the work of conventional security agencies across the Eleven Local Government Areas in Ibadanland.

The initiative was conceived around the understanding that security cannot be left entirely to government and conventional law-enforcement institutions. Community leaders and residents, who are closer to developments in their neighbourhoods, also have an important role to play in preventing crimes and protecting the lives and property of all the residents.

Over 5,000 community guards were unveiled under the initiative, with the objective of strengthening security and improving investor confidence in Ibadanland.

The 44th Olubadan had earlier charged all the Mogajis and Baales to take the security of their communities seriously, describing vigilance at the grassroots as an important component of tackling security challenges.

This represents a significant departure from viewing the traditional institution merely as a custodian of culture.

Under Oba Ladoja, community leadership is being connected directly to the protection of lives, property and economic activities.

Perhaps, one of the most striking features of the new reign is economic development at the centre of traditional leadership.

The launch of Gaari Ibadan, through the Olubadan Economic and Investment Committee is another major component of the vision of Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja. The initiative seeks to contribute to the revival of struggling businesses and investments in the city.

The Committee is chaired by a former Minister of Trade and Investment, Chief Onikepo Akande, with former Head of Service of the Federation, Professor Oladapo Afolabi, as Co-Chairman. The initiative reflects a growing recognition that the prosperity of Ibadanland requires deliberate collaboration among traditional institutions, government, business leaders, professionals and the wider community.

This economic orientation is particularly significant, given Ibadan’s history as a major commercial, industrial and administrative centre in Nigeria. The challenge before the ancient city is no longer simply how to preserve its historic identity, but how to translate that identity into sustainable economic opportunities for its growing population.

Oba Ladoja is determined to make the Palace an important meeting point for ideas capable of advancing that objective.

Another notable development under Ọba Ladoja is the effort at strengthening the standards governing entry into the traditional hierarchy.

In April 2026, the respected Monarch declared that access to the Olubadan line would no longer be determined by wealth or influence. Prospective traditional title holders, he said, would be expected to possess quality education, have legitimate means of livelihood and have tangible records of good contributions to their families, Compounds, and Ibadanland in general.

The significance of this policy cannot be underestimated. Traditional institutions derive their legitimacy not only from history but also from the character and conduct of those who occupy positions. By emphasising contribution to society rather than financial influence, Oba Rashidi Ladoja is preserving the credibility and dignity of the Ibadan traditional system for future generations.

His position effectively sends a message, that traditional titles should represent responsibility and service rather than status alone.

Since ascending the throne on September 26, 2025, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, Arusa 1, has also continued to engage with the wider traditional institution and government.

In January 2026, he assumed the rotational Chairmanship of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, which further expands his responsibilities beyond Ibadanland.

This role provides another platform through which his experience as a former Governor, Senator, Businessman and Traditional Ruler can contribute to issues of governance, security, development and peaceful coexistence across Oyo State.

Before becoming Olubadan of Ibadanland, he had occupied several important positions in public and private life. His experience in government as Governor gives him an understanding of the workings of Oyo State, while his decades within the Ibadan traditional hierarchy provide knowledge of the City at the grassroots.

Oba Ladoja’s reign has continued to amplify discussions around the future of Ibadan and the interest of its people. A notable example is his continued advocacy for the creation of Ibadan State.

During a visit by the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio in Ibadan, the Olubadan restated the clamour for Ibadan State, in addition to his public and sole demand from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his day of Coronation in 2025 at the popular Mapo Square, Ibadan.

Oba Ladoja commended President Tinubu’s administration over ongoing Federal infrastructure projects in Ibadan and other parts of Oyo State.

He, however, urged contractors handling the projects to maintain high standards and use quality materials to ensure that the approved roads and other infrastructure deliver lasting value.

That position captures an important aspect of his approach to leadership, that support for development should be accompanied by accountability and insistence on quality.

Another emerging feature of his reign in the last one year, is the growing engagement between the Olubadan institution and Corporate Organisations interested in the economic development of Ibadan.

The visit of the Board and Management of Oodu’a Investment Company Limited to the Olubadan Palace in April 2026, for instance, focused on strengthening collaboration and the economic revitalisation of Ibadanland. The Company’s leadership reaffirmed the importance of Ibadan as its Ancestral and Corporate Home.

Such engagements are important because the development of a major city like Ibadan cannot be achieved by government alone. Traditional institutions can serve as bridges between communities, investors, businesses and government, helping to create confidence and promote partnerships.

The first year of Oba Ladoja’s reign has therefore presented a broader interpretation of traditional leadership. The Olubadan institution remains deeply rooted in history and culture, but the demands of contemporary Ibadan require a Traditional Ruler like Ọba Ladoja who can also speak to issues of security, investment, employment, infrastructure, education and social development.

In this regard, Oba Rashidi Ladoja has repositioned the Palace as a platform for ideas and collective action. His initiatives have also been complemented by the authority and experience of the Olubadan-in-Council, Mogajis, Baales, Business leaders, professionals, religious leaders and other stakeholders across Ibadanland.

Worthy of mention are the support and contributions of his wife, Queen (Barr) Rashidat Olayinka Ladoja to the sustenance of peace and support to humanity in many ways.

As Kabiyesi, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, Arusa 1 continues on the throne of his forbearers, Ibadan Community Guards must continue to complement the statutory security agencies in Ibadanland. His Economic initiatives must translate into jobs, revived businesses and increased investment.

Also, traditional reforms must endure beyond individual personalities, while advocacy for Ibadan’s development must continue to produce constructive engagement with the government.

Oba Ladoja’s first year has established a clear direction: a traditional institution that seeks to preserve culture while actively participating in the development of society. For a city as historically significant and economically strategic as Ibadan, that approach is both timely and necessary.

As Ọba Rashidi Adewolu Akanmu Ladoja celebrates his first Coronation Anniversary, the emerging narrative is that of a Monarch who has sought to redefine the meaning of traditional leadership in a modern Nigerian city by moving the Palace from the realm of ceremonial authority towards a more active role in security, economic development, social responsibility and community mobilisation.

Longer may you reign our revered Kabiyesi Olubadan, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Akanmu Ladoja, Arusa 1, the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
