29 Confirmed Dead After Herbal Drink Consumption In Ondo

29 people have been confirmed dead following the consumption of suspected poisoning from locally brewed alcoholic substance in some communities in Odigbo Local Government,Ondo State.
Some residents of Araromi Obu and Odigbo communities were said to have fallen ill after consuming substances suspected to be herbal drinks.
24 deaths believed to be connected with substance were initially confirmed.
Five more people have also recorded to have met their untimely death.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Banji Ajaka, who visited health facilities in Araromi-Obu, said the government had put in place an investigation team to unravel the cause of the deaths.
Dr Ajaka disclosed that preliminary findings had ruled out viral and bacterial infections,adding that all indications point to a possibility of mixing alcohol with an unidentified substance .
He warned residents against consuming unregulated alcoholic mixtures, stating that the health risks were not limited to the two communities.
Meanwhile, The Ondo State Government has withheld the bodies of victims of the suspected poisoning incident from burial, as three bodies have been taken to the General Hospital, Araromi-Obu, for autopsy to determine the cause of the sudden deaths.
The Chairman of Odigbo Local Government Area, Mr. Taiwo Adegoroye, disclosed that families of the deceased had been directed not to bury the bodies until the relevant medical examinations were completed.
